Maine Venture Fund Launches Microfund Program to help support earlier stage entrepreneurs

Historically, Maine Venture Fund (MVF) has invested in high growth Maine based companies which have demonstrated commercial traction. Getting a company to the revenue stage is no easy feat, and often takes lots of time and plenty of capital. An entrepreneur might need to bootstrap by using personal money, raise grant funding from organizations like Maine Technology Institute, or gather investment from friends and family.

To help better support earlier stage entrepreneurs, MVF has launched what we are calling a “microfund program” to offer smaller investments of $25-50K, versus our traditional $100-$300K investments, for companies which have yet to commercialize but show promise. This earlier stage capital should help more companies bridge the gap between idea and launch, and will be especially helpful to entrepreneurs who do not have access to “friends & family” wealth.

“The MVF Board made a strategic decision to expand MVF’s impact across the state during the past year, and this program is one example of putting that goal into action. We hope that these microfund investments will provide a smoother path for ambitious entrepreneurs seeking to build the next generation of great Maine-based companies,” says Dr. Brien Walton, Maine Venture Fund’s Board Chair.

Microfund investments are subject to MVF’s investment criteria, which includes a high growth roadmap, Maine-based employees and matching co-investment.
