Maine Venture Fund is excited to welcome Orange Bike Brewing, Portland, Maine’s first dedicated gluten-free brewery and tasting room, to the MVF Portfolio!
When it opens in fall 2023, Orange Bike Brewing Company (OBB) will be Portland’s first 100% dedicated gluten-free brewery and tasting room. In what was once an early 1900s coat and apron factory in Portland’s East Bayside neighborhood, OBB will brew and serve gluten-free beer that rivals the world’s best craft beers.
“There is no reason that beer lovers should have to sacrifice their health for flavor, or flavor for their health,” said OBB Founder and CEO Tom Ruff. “Our brewery will eliminate that tension and set a new standard in delicious, gluten-free beer.”
Under the guiding vision of the founder Ruff – Orange Bike is committed to raising the bar for gluten-free beer and intends to make OBB a center and symbol of positive change in Maine and beyond. With a focus on the triple bottom line – social, environmental, and financial – the OBB team is committed to setting a new standard within the craft beer industry.
Since its pilot beer launch in 2021, OBB has already developed twelve recipes under the direction of award-winning master brewer and consultant Alan Pugsley. Pugsley studied under the legendary Peter F. Austin, whom the BBC labeled the “Godfather of craft beer.” Throughout his career, Mr. Pugsley has helped launch more than 100 successful breweries, including Shipyard, Magic Hat, The Shed, Geary’s, and Long Trail.
“I love the challenge of brewing the world’s best beer of any type, and I am confident that Orange Bike Brewing will become a pioneering leader in gluten-free beer,” Mr. Pugsley said.
In addition to pioneering a new standard in sustainable brewing, OBB is defined by its commitment to making a positive impact on the local community, welcoming Maine’s rich diversity of people in a spirit of hospitality, inclusivity, dignity, and friendship, and expanding the potential for meaningful new jobs for Mainers.
“Ever since the first breweries were established thousands of years ago in ancient Mesopotamia, beer has brought people together, and OBB is proud to bring together a diverse team that reflects the diversity of the community we intend to serve,” Mr. Ruff said.
