Our next feature in the Board Member Spotlights Series!
We will introduce one of our Board members to share a little bit more about their experience and the perspective they bring to Maine Venture Fund.
The MVF Board is made up of 11 members, 10 appointed by the Governor and one ex officio member representing DECD. Each person brings specific expertise that enables MVF to thoughtfully evaluate the best way to support Maine companies. The MVF Board is responsible for making all investment decisions.
This installment features Susan Ahern, Vice President of Innovation, Mainehealth
MVF Board member since 2023.
Can you share a little bit about your professional experience?
Currently I serve as Vice President of Innovation with MaineHealth. I have the honor of collaborating with 23,000 amazing care team members to advance novel solutions to unmet care needs. My career spans from co-founding four biomedical and healthcare startups, to being an assistant cheesemaker, to learning diplomacy at the international level. I thrive at creating value, improving lives and building communities in and around a common purpose.
In your capacity at Maine Health, what types of initiatives and issues do you most like helping entrepreneurs with?
I love connecting and working together with passionate colleagues and entrepreneurs focused on innovative solutions to make our communities the healthiest in America.
What is one of your favorite summer activities in Maine?
Being wowed is one of my favorite activities! I simply look up at night and see the stars and planets and am in awe of the natural world.
Can you share one thing you always consider in the diligence process for companies pursuing investment from MVF?
The team. I believe the management team is one of the most critical components when considering an investment. I will always select an A team with a B idea rather than a B team with an A idea because the A team will consistently refine, or pivot, and elevate the original concept, whereas a B team with an A idea will struggle to reach its full potential.
How do you recharge?
Oh so many ways! I love laughing with my 92-year-old mom, enjoying a day at the beach with my family and friends, and exploring new towns both foreign and domestic!
