Our fourth feature in the Board Member Spotlights Series!
We will introduce one of our Board members to share a little bit more about their experience and the perspective they bring to Maine Venture Fund.
The MVF Board is made up of 11 volunteers, all appointed by the Governor of Maine, and each with specific expertise that enables MVF as an organization to thoughtfully evaluate the best way to support Maine companies. The MVF Board is responsible for making all investment decisions.
This installment features Elizabeth Chabe.
MVF Board member since 2018.
Can you share a little bit about your professional experience?
Over the past decade and a half, I've built a fulfilling career at the intersection of science, technology, and marketing. I’m currently the CEO of High Touch Group, a specialty marketing agency that supports advanced science and engineering organizations as they launch new products and elevate their brands globally. Before that, I served in various marketing and program management roles at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center and The Jackson Laboratory.
What is a professional accomplishment you are most proud of?
I wrote a book about science marketing that is being published in 2024!
What is one of your favorite places you have traveled to?
I've had many memorable travel experiences, but one of my favorites is Vietnam, where I lived for nearly three years. The rich history, vibrant culture, and the warm nature of the people made it feel, as a visitor, like stepping into a completely new world. Coupled with the incredible cuisine, my time in Vietnam was not only enlightening but also quite delicious!
Can you share one thing you always consider in the diligence process for companies pursuing investment from MVF?
Great question! The founding team needs to demonstrate a unique combination of expertise and adaptability. When I say “expertise,” I'm referring to an intimate understanding of not just the problem their startup is striving to address, but also why this problem is crucial to their target market. A founder's strong conviction in their mission fuels the team's momentum and aligns the company towards a singular purpose. But, especially with early stage companies, the founding team will encounter challenges throughout their company’s development. Can they adapt to recessionary conditions, competitors, and technology shifts? We need founders who can adjust their sails when winds change.
How do you recharge?
I find solace in spending quality time with my family, including our two rescue dogs, Flaca and Carlos. I'm an amateur film photographer, which allows me to capture and appreciate the beauty of our surroundings—and of the dogs!
